Hair

To keep things simple for recital day, we will use two consistent hairstyles so dancers who are in multiple routines can easily switch between them.

Clogging & Hip Hop Classes

Hair should be styled in a slicked-back low ponytail.
Use gel or hairspray to smooth flyaways and secure the style.

Ballet Classes

Hair should be styled in a slicked-back low bun.
Please make sure buns are secured well with pins and hairspray.

Tiny Tots

If your dancer’s hair is not long enough for a bun or ponytail, please simply make sure their hair is cleanly pulled out of their face.

These hairstyles allow dancers in multiple classes to quickly adjust their hair between routines.

If you need assistance with hair, we are happy to help backstage. Parents will not be asked to come backstage for hair, makeup, or costume changes once dancers have been dropped off at check-in. We want you to relax and enjoy the show!

Makeup

We believe that parents should be able to decide what is appropriate for their dancer based on their parenting style. That said, please be warned that dancers without any makeup on will appear extremely “washed out” under stage lighting. Footlights and spotlights are very harsh, and the best way to look healthy and natural under them is to rely on a little makeup.

AGES 3–9

Recreational Dancers
We recommend at least a light layer of powder or foundation, warm blush, and lipstick with a pink undertone.

AGES 10+

Recreational Dancers
For older dancers, we suggest heavier makeup with foundation, blush, deep red or pink lipstick, and eye makeup, including mascara. If your dancer is very young and you object, keep in mind the recital is a once-a-year event and feels a lot to your dancer like playing dress-up. Why not allow them the works?

COMPETITION LEVEL DANCERS

Competition level dancers should follow the same makeup guidelines they use for competition. False eyelashes are not required, but you are welcome to use them if you prefer.

Assistance in touching up makeup will be provided backstage by our volunteer staff for all recreational dancers.
